The ritual for wearing perfume is different for everyone, depending on their preferences, habits and tips. Some prefer to perfume their clothes and others directly on the skin.

On the skin, areas allow more intense diffusion. These are the pulsation points, places where the body releases more heat and therefore better diffusion of perfume (inside the wrists, behind the ears, on the back of the neck, on the chest).

L'eau de Cologne

What is the history and origin of Eau de Cologne?

Eau de Cologne, often associated with the feeling of freshness and lightness, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back centuries. This intoxicating fragrance has its origins in Cologne, Germany, under the name “Aqua Mirabilis” or “Eau Admirable”. Composed of wine spirit (brandy from wine), natural ingredients of rosemary, lemon balm, subtle citrus essences such as citron, lemon, or bitter orange, but also of extracts of fine lavender and benzoin, Eau de Cologne sees its authorship, generally attributed in 1709 to Jean-Marie Farina. A migrant of Italian origin residing in Cologne, this paternity has however given rise to much controversy (see the book Montpellier ancestral capital of perfume). It would seem, in fact, that Jean-Marie Farina is only its ambassador. A trial whose story is fascinating confirms the creation of Eau de Cologne in 1695 by his uncle, the liquorist perfumer Giovanni Paolo Feminis: “After detailed examination of the documents produced by the parties, the courts decided that Jean-Marie Farina could not being the creator of the famous alcoholate. »

This delicious spirit is an ode to Mediterranean scents that quickly gained popularity in Europe and was adopted by the French nobility. The history of perfume shows that from the mid-18th century, the fashion for scents with very aromatic notes gave way to light fragrances. Floral perfume and citrus olfactory notes then became fashionable at the Court of France. The Marquise de Pompadour, favorite of Louis XV, imposed this German water which was consumed as a delicate aroma or rubbed on the body with a cloth, as a remedy, a perfume or as an invigorating essence. The craze for this refined fragrance has only grown over the centuries. Empress Joséphine contributed to its success; her husband Napoleon I had also adopted a very particular scented ritual for himself and his horse; he consumed more than 40 liters/year.

This discreetly elegant eau will ultimately only retain over time its use as a perfume, an exceptional emblematic perfume, a timeless creation, a masculine perfume, a feminine perfume, a non-gendered perfume, terribly ahead of its time ! It was in the 19th century that French houses began to produce their own interpretations of Eau de Cologne, artisanal creations adapting the spirit of the original formula by adding natural floral essences and sometimes even woody notes. . Helping to popularize this exquisite perfume in aristocratic and bourgeois circles, Eau de Cologne became an essential fashion accessory, a symbol of refinement and elegance. In the twentieth century, the French perfume market, with the advent of houses like Guerlain, Chanel and Dior, played a key role in its global diffusion, transforming this water into a very popular luxury perfume. Over the years, this exclusive perfume gradually gained popularity among a wider audience, with perfumers increasingly diversifying their formulations to respond to changing tastes and fashion codes. More feminine waters, shaped by cultural influences. Iconic celebrities from Marilyn Monroe to Audrey Hepburn have helped add a very glamorous touch to the history of this perfume.

What is Eau de Cologne?

Today, given the numerous adaptations of Eau Admirable, Eau de Cologne terminology has evolved considerably. We can talk about Eau de Cologne for a perfume with citrus facets, for a lemon, grapefruit, orange perfume, for a citrus, zesty perfume, assembled with Mediterranean aromatic notes of lavender, rosemary or mint, or even for a subtle fragrance that brings a vivid sensory experience and an invigorating sensation, whether it is a masculine perfume or a feminine perfume, or a mixed perfume.

What is the difference between Eau de Cologne and other types of perfumes?

The term Eau de Cologne is currently very often replaced, associated or confused with the terminology of fresh water. It is then a perfume with a low concentration of odorous ingredients (2-5%), which makes it a lighter and refreshing option than eau de toilette (5-8%) or eau de parfum ( 8-15%), or even perfume (15-30%). Due to its lightness, Eau de Cologne will be more generally appreciated for a touch of elegance, a discreet elegance, during the summer seasons.

What are the traditional ingredients in Eau de Cologne?

Citrus essential oils
Citrus essential oils, extracted by cold expression from the zest of lemons, oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruits, are prized ingredients in the composition of Eaux de Cologne. Their use dates back several centuries and helps to give Colognes light, fresh, sparkling fragrances, particularly popular Mediterranean and summer scents. Citrus essential oils, quality ingredients, are also often appreciated for their energizing properties, making Eaux de Cologne a popular choice for those looking for a light fragrance, a timeless, timeless creation. More currently, certain niche houses are participating in the promotion of Eaux de Cologne by putting original natural ingredients back on the agenda, or more sustainable alternatives linked to the preservation of the heritage of this timeless classic fragrance. ODORE SCOLA is part of this lineage, offering contemporary creations heirs to the history of Montpellier perfumers, under the Cologne de l’Ecusson brand. This range revisits traditional recipes with modernity and singularity, bringing together quality ingredients with a high proportion of natural ingredients for a unique, modern and timeless olfactory balance, refined essences captured in elegant portable bottles or sprays. Different variations are offered: overdose of citrus fruits, orange blossom, fresh mint, jasmine flower, rose, patchouli, bergamot…

Herbaceous notes
Eaux fraiches or Cologne with herbaceous notes are often enriched with aromatic herb extracts such as mint, rosemary, sage or verbena, giving them a natural and elegant dimension, ideal for those seeking a sensory experience light and invigorating, letting yourself be transported by green fragrances closer to nature.

Floral notes
Historically, in France, Montpellier lost, among other things, its place as the capital of perfume, when the fashion for herbaceous and aromatic notes gave way to that of Grasse flowers: lavender and May rose... Fresh waters with floral notes are an olfactory celebration of gardens and flower fields. These perfumes, often evoking softness and femininity, capture and restore the very essence of the fragrant petals. Fragrances like rose, jasmine or lavender Eau de Cologne offer an enchanting sensory experience. Floral notes bring a natural and eternal elegance to Eaux de Cologne, creating a delicate and romantic ambiance. Worn, these perfumes leave a deliciously floral trail, evoking the freshness of a spring bouquet, which begins to be part of masculine compositions, making these fragrances an ideal choice for those looking for a soft fragrance with a touch of romance in their daily routine.

Woody notes
Eaux de Cologne with woody notes reveal a warm and telluric dimension, bringing natural elegance. Enriched by natural ingredients such as essential oils with woody notes of cedar, sandalwood, or even vetiver, these perfumes offer a rich and subtle olfactory experience, depth and a certain sophistication. These fragrances, for their olfactory balance, often integrate musky and spicy accords, thus creating a harmonious balance between the freshness of citrus fruits and the sweetness of warm notes. An olfactory experience that seduces them with its natural charm.

Alcohol and water
If Eau de Cologne initially was a remedy, a perfume, and because of its natural ingredients and low alcohol content some formulations were mild enough to consume, drinking contemporary Eau de Cologne would not only not recommended due to its ingredients, but it could also be dangerous due to the alcohol content and other inedible substances added for perfumery. Eau de Cologne is today reserved for external use. The alcohol used, in fine perfumery more generally, is a denatured alcohol with an infinitesimal quantity of a very bitter compound, making it inedible.

How to choose the ideal Eau de Cologne?

But then, how to choose your Eau de Cologne today? Whether you're a perfume connoisseur or simply looking for a light, pleasant scent to wear every day, Eau de Cologne offers a timeless option that has stood the test of time and continues to appeal. Choosing an Eau de Cologne that suits you is a personal experience. Far from the original and unique mirabilis water of the 18th century, a variety in the harmony of essences exists, multiple faceted olfactory blends make it possible to meet the tastes of each and everyone, classic style? Fragrant delicacy with subtle nuances? Sensory escape? Sophisticated scent? Irresistible scents for olfactory seduction? Exquisite perfume in a vintage bottle? everything is possible.

What could our advice be?

1. Become familiar with the notes. Take the time to explore the olfactory notes present in the construction of Eaux de Cologne, from citrus fruits to aromatic herbs, including floral notes. Identify the notes that resemble or please us the most.

2. Consider the season and daily temporality. Gone are the days when we adopted a perfume for a lifetime, perfumes are part of our wardrobe, and must change according to our mood, the seasons, the events, of the day... If Eaux de Cologne, lighter, will be more popular in summer or during the day, we also like the sparkle of citrus fruits on a winter day.

3. Explore different perfume houses. Each has its own interpretation of Eau de Cologne. Far from the overly commercial mass paths, we must hunt for captivating fragrances, explore creative workshops, taste niche and author creations, more artisanal, full of ingredients chosen for their quality rather than for the effect of fashion.

Eau de Cologne has survived the centuries while retaining its timeless charm. From humble beginnings in Cologne, it has become a global perfume icon, captivating the senses with its distinctive freshness and elegance. Its rich history, marked by cultural evolutions and diverse influences, reflects its adaptability and its timeless power to evoke emotions. Today, Eau de Cologne remains an olfactory expression imbued with history, tradition and timeless refinement.
